Iran elction and round up

We are witnessing now an event that could change Iran's history. Granted, even if the protests do succeed in forcing a recount and even changing the election result, the risk of nuclear proliferation remains as none of the candidates is willing to renounce this policy.

One thing is for sure, Susan Boyle and the will she won't she, oh of course she will perform drama has been relegated further into the newspaper while real news takes precedence. You know you have reached become the world's focus when Twitter itself starts turning profile pictures green in support of the cause and cancels planned maintenance in order to let Iranians communicate with the outside world, other avenues have been blocked already. The question is if the election is re-run and the queues (an inspiration to us all who can't be bothered to walk down the road to vote) form, will the result be any different? One can only assume that despite the proclaimed victor's attempt to quell the uprising the people will be heard. I just hope that the result is not more blood shed than we have already witnessed.

Racism has reared its ugly head again here in Blighty. This time it is Romanians on the receiving end, I find it totally abhorrent that you can judge someone on the colour of their skin or their nationality. Surely we are all intelligent enough to realise that on the inside we all have the same bits doing the same jobs, it really shouldn't matter what colour the packaging is or the accent we speak with.

This brings me on to the news that apparently the Essex accent is dying out, people are being picked up on their elocution and now the once lauded Estuary English is going the same way as the cockney sparrow!

Congratulations must go to Andy Murray who won Queens on Sunday quite convincingly. Of course now the media circus is getting into gear as the grass of SW19 beckons on Monday, yes he will do well, will he win it, who knows, sport is a funny thing and you never know if your number will be up! Even so I hope they leave him alone to do what he does best, play tennis.

Not so good with the cricket of course, as England fell in the super 8's although to be frank, based on some of the performances we were lucky to get that far. In all reality we need to improve before the Ashes start next month. However we have managed to qualify for the World Cup so as soon as the domestic season finishes next year expect lots of hype, flags and other assorted useless tat to appear everywhere!

In education the main focus seems to be on scrapping the ailing SATS in place of exams in the first year of secondary school. The argument about the haves and have nots rumbles on and the only real conclusion I can draw is that you will never please everybody but for goodness sake place children's welfare and learning at the centre of the policies rather than the cost of them, educated them in buildings fit for purpose and get apathetic parents behind their local school and you'll be onto a winner.
